Each runner must hand off the baton to their teammate within a specific zone, usually marked by triangles on a track. Runners that fail to make the zone in time are disqualified. If there is a considerable difference in speed between the runners, each runner should use a “blind handoff” by starting to accelerate just before entering the zone and then opening their hand behind them after a few strides, by which time the incoming runner should have caught up with them. The runner will usually give an auditory signal, such as “Stick!” repeated several times, for the recipient of the baton to put out their hand.
It is important to emphasize that although a race is a competition, it is only as competitive as each individual team chooses to be. If a steep hill along the course makes it impossible to run the entire distance without stopping, it is acceptable for the team to walk a portion of the distance.
